caring for a blind dog - helping a blind dog adjust
COOL BLIND DOG VIDEO
This video was submitted to us by Elisabeth Sadler, mother to blind TinkerBelle, seen in this video. This is proof that a blind dog can run and play just like a sighted dog. If you have a blind dog and are struggling with it, please hang in there, and watch this video. Elisabeth wishes to thank Michael Santino for the filming, music and editing of this great video.
HOW TO TEACH THIS METHOD TO YOUR DOG From Elisabeth Sadler
TinkerBelle learned to longe by observing our horse, Calvin, for over ten years when she was sighted. However, I have tried teaching it to Spanky and it is just a matter of pulling the long line in the direction you want the dog to walk, trot, or canter and running alongside with encouraging words of praise when they do several steps in the circle. The more they do the more you praise. Small tidbits of meat couldn't hurt, either, as a reward when it looks like they are starting to get it. I wouldn't treat while longeing but after they complete a circle or two. You have to run in the training phase, also, to give them some idea and a slight tension on the lead line will assure them that it is safe to run.
If you want to longe two dogs at once, get a long lead with clips on both ends and run around in the center with both your arms directing them in orbit around you.
TinkerBelle now does this without the lead line and I orient her as to my location by clucking and kissing sounds; like what you do to make a horse longe.
